중소기업의 운전자본 관리가 수익성과 기업가치에 미치는 영향 : 성장단계에 따른 효과

초록

중소기업은 세계경제의 불확실성에 대한 대처능력의 취약성과 자본조달의 어려움 때문에 운전자본관리가 매우 중요함에도 불구하고 중소기업의 운전자본관리에 대한 연구가 미흡하다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구에서는 첫째, 중소기업의 운전자본관리가 수익성과 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 검증하며, 둘째, 성장단계별로 중소기업의 운전자본관리가 수익성과 기업가치에 미치는 영향이 차별화되는지를 분석한다. 분석결과, 첫째, 중소기업의 운전자본비율이 높을수록 장기적으로 수익성이 개선되는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 중소기업의 운전자본비율은 기업가치에 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 셋째, 도약기에는 중소기업의 운전자본비율이 수익성에 영향을 미치지 못하였으나 성장기와 성숙기에는 운전자본비율이 높을수록 수익성이 개선되는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 도약기와 성장기에 중소기업의 운전자본비율이 기업가치에 미치는 영향은 발견하지 못하였으나 성숙기에서는 운전자본비율이 높을수록 기업가치가 하락하였다. 본 연구는 중소기업의 운전자본관리가 수익성과 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 검증함과 동시에 성장단계(도약기, 성장기, 성숙기)별로 분석하였다는 점에서 의의가 깊다. 본 연구의 결과는 중소기업의 운전자본관리 정책 뿐만 아니라 정부의 중소기업에 대한 운전자본지원 정책의 방향성에도 도움이 될 것이다.

Abstract

Working capital management is very important for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) because of their weak ability to cope with uncertainties in the global economy and difficulties in raising capital. However, research on working capital management of SMEs is insufficient. Against this background, first, this study comprehensively verifies the effects of SMEs’ working capital management on profitability and value. Second, this study analyzes whether the effects of SMEs’ working capital management on profitability and value are differentiated by growth stage. As a result of the analysis, first, in the cases of SMEs, the higher the working capital ratio, the better the profitability, and it is found that SMEs’ conservative working capital management have a positive effect on their profitability in the long run. Second, in the cases of SMEs, their working capital ratio do not affect their value. Third, SMEs’ working capital ratio do not affect their profitability during the leap-up period. However, in the growth and maturity stages, the higher the working capital ratio, the better the profitability. Fourth, I do not find the effects of SMEs’ working capital ratio on their value during the leap-up and growth phases. However, in the maturity stage, the higher the working capital ratio, the lower the corporate value. This study is significant in that it comprehensively verifies the effects of SMEs' working capital management on their profitability and value and further analyzes such effects by growth stage (leap-up, growth, and maturity). The result of this study will be helpful not only in the working capital management policy of SMEs, but also in the direction of the government’s working capital support policy for SMEs.
