Abstract

As the silver society grows, there is a growing demand of service robots for the elderly. This paper is a research on basic perception of the telepresence robot for physical condition of elderly people. We explored how the physical condition of the elderly affects their acceptance of telepresence robot as a universal tool for social participation. A elderly people were divided into a physically handicapped group using mobility aids and a relatively healthy group. Experiments were conducted to test the difference in robot acceptability of two groups after telepresence robot demonstration. The result by non-parametric statistical analysis shows that physical disability did not affect the robot acceptability of the elderly. Unexpectedly, self-assessed health status worked as a meaningful variable with a positive correlation with robot acceptability. This finding led that subjective belief on the older people’s physical capability, not physical disability more affect their acceptance of telepresence robot for social participation.
