Abstract
In this study, we investigated academic achievements and school life adaptation of the Science High School students admitted by affirmative action. We conducted one-on-one interviews with 36 students and received feedback on the analysis and interpretation of the results from 2 teachers and 5 students. The students expressed a very positive attitude towards their enrollments. In terms of academic achievements, they felt a sense of burden to keep up with the rigorous curriculum due to their inadequate preparation. However, they showed efforts to cope with the workload and gradually adapted. In terms of school life, they mentioned that lack of sleep and physical stamina were challenges, but they found joy in dormitory living and were adapting well in that aspect. It is crucial to have a good understanding of the school and be well-prepared. They emphasized the importance of having confidence. Based on the results, we have proposed several suggestions to ensure that more students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds can have a successful experience in a Science high school.
