Abstract

This study conducts a diachronic comparative analysis of wheat, Jangran- hyung Jars, shiru (steamer) and 呂-and 凸-shaped dwellings-elements that are consistently identified at archaeological sites in the Gyeonggi region of Korea from the Proto-Three Kingdoms period to the Hanseong period of Baekje. The aim is to elucidate the patterns and significance of changes in everyday culture-namely, foodways and residential practices-associated with Baekje state formation. The analysis revealed that wheat, Jangran-hyung Jars, and shiru, all associated with steamed food, became widely accepted across various social strata as their geographical distribution expanded and their use increased. On the other hand, while 呂-and 凸-shaped dwellings also expanded geographically, their use became more limited to the upper classes, particularly in the new and southeastern areas of Gyeonggi Province. Wheat and Jangran-hyung Jars are generally associated with Mahan cultural traditions, while 呂- and 凸-shaped dwellings are linked to Ye(濊)-based cultural elements. These differing trajectories of cultural change suggest a complex process of cultural convergence in which the traditions of various groups were transformed in differentiated ways during the state formation process. Furthermore, this process of cultural convergence is thought to have been influenced by the state's political and economic strategies-such as increasing agricultural productivity, establishing a specialized production system, and developing base settlements. It was also interpreted as a national social strategy aimed at integrating different groups, such as the Han and Ye populations, and establishing a class-based social order. However, in certain areas such as the Imjin and Hantan River basins, where food culture remained largely unchanged, and in the western Gyeonggi region, the Osancheon basin, and the Hwanggujicheon basin, where residential culture also showed little transformation, it was confirmed that cultural change was not solely driven by state strategy. Rather, it also reflected the economic and cultural foundations, local environments, and the agency of regional communities in making selective choices.
