Abstract

This study examined the achievements and challenges of the sexual minority movement in Lebanon since the establishment of the Arab world’s first LGBTQ organization in 2000. It does not take a stance on homosexuality but seeks to objectively explore the LGBTQ movement in Lebanese society. Lebanese LGBTQ organizations have worked to improve societal perceptions, including advocating for the repeal of Article 534 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes homosexuality. These efforts have drawn international attention and encouraged a more progressive stance within Lebanon’s judiciary and legislature. Despite these advances, negative perceptions of LGBTQ individuals remain deeply entrenched in Lebanese society, posing ongoing challenges to the movement.
