이 글은 북·중 접경지역 북한주민의 이동과 중국에서의 생활을 친족과 민족 유대라는 측면에서 분석한다. 중국의 개혁개방과 북한의 경제난을 기점으로, 문화대혁명 시기 단절되었던 북·중 간의 친족 연결은 다시 재개되었고 양편의 이동도 늘어났다. 본 연구는 중국에 친척이 있는 북한주민이 생존을 모색하는 과정에서 친족/민족 유대의 의미가 어떻게 변화되고, 어떠한 방식으로 수행되는지를 살펴본다. 중국연고 북한주민은 사회·문화적 환경 변화에 따라 친족과 민족 유대를 경제적 이해를 중심으로 생존을 위한 가치를 생산해내는 현장으로 만들어 갔다. 하지만 중국 체류 기간 북한주민은 민족 커뮤니티에서 어긋남을 경험하면서 중국 친척, 조선족 사회와 거리두기를 통해 관계성과 민족 경계를 재구성하게 된다. 이러한 중국연고 북한주민이 수행하는 유연한 행위 주체성은 또 다른 대안 전략과 문화적 실천을 창조해낼 가능성을 함의한다.
Abstract
This article aims to trace the journey of mobility and settlement of North Koreans in terms of kinship and ethnicity. At the intersection of reform and opening-up in China and the economic crisis in North Korea, North Koreans returnees from China reconnected the ties with the forgotten relatives in Yanbian and their cross-border mobilities have increased. In this sense, this article investigates how the meaning of kinship and ethnic relations were changed and performed by North Koreans in pursuit of survival strategies. North Koreans claimed and developed kinship and ethnic ties as a critical site that produces the economic value for survival dependent on socio-cultural circumstances. However, the negative experiences in the ethnic enclaves in China led them reconstruct the relatedness and the ethnic boundaries through distancing from their relatives and ethnic communities. These findings imply that the flexible subjectivity performed by North Koreans bring possibilities to create another alternative strategies and cultural practices.
