초록

Against the backdrop of the dramatic expansion of international student mobility (ISM) in East Asia during the past few decades, this study investigates the social mobility opportunities that ISM in Asia offers ethnic minority actors. Korean-Chinese (chaoxian-zu) students from northeastern China who pursue degrees from universities in Korea and Japan transcend national and cultural spaces with their competency in Asian languages, multi-cultural understanding, and demonstrated adaptability in business and quotidian environments in East Asia. Through an ethnographic study, we argue that they strategically deploy ethnic capital as a critical resource to facilitate ISM, and subsequently leverage university credentials to secure successful, upwardly mobile careers within increasingly interconnected Asian business networks. In so doing, they are mainstreamed both in their home and in host societies, with some achieving mobility beyond Asia.
