Abstract

This paper examines how older Sakhalin Korean women make sense of mothers’ migration, leaving behind their children on Sakhalin(Russia). Since 2000, Sakhalin Koreans have returned to their so-called homeland, South Korea. However, due to the age-based entitlement of return, it has brought about transnational separation between older parents and their children. This paper highlights gendered moral discourses around mothers’ migration that older Sakhalin Korean women have produced and circulated. These include everyday discourses of abandonment, burden, and mothers’ retirement. Within the context where women’s migration is blamed, not only returnee women but also the women who stay on Sakhalin actively create various counter-meanings. This paper suggests that issues around women’s migration are not limited to working age women and small children. Age and life course also play an important role in shaping women’s discourses and imagination on their transnational migration.
