초록

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a widely used antibiotic for staving off bacterial growth inboth human and animal medicines. It has been detected in various environments such as surfacewater, soils and groundwater. It is very difficult to achieve complete removal of antibiotics by theconventional biological wastewater treatment. Al2O3 with γ-ray irradiation has been used to treatSMX. This study focused on total organic carbon (TOC) removal of SMX in the presence of Al2O3by γ-ray irradiation. TOC removal efficiencies of SMX can increase by hydroxyl radical (·OH)generation with adding Al2O3. For γ-ray irradiation with Al2O3, continuous mixing during theirradiation is very important for higher TOC removal efficiencies of SMX. In γ-ray irradiation,TOC removal efficiencies in acidic conditions (pH 3) are higher than those of neutral (pH 7) andalkaline conditions (pH 11). Al2O3 with γ-ray irradiation was very effective for TOC removal ofSMX.
