본 연구는 12세기 유대 종교 철학자 마이모니데스의 이슬람에 대한 관점을 살피고자 한다. 마이모니데스의 대표 저작에 나타난 이슬람에 대한 언급과 배경을 확인하고, 이를 ‘유일신 사상과 우상숭배논란’, ‘예언자 및 경전’ 등의 주제로 분류하여 쟁점이 되는 사안에 대해 어떠한 견해를 제시했는지 확인하는 것을 목표로 한다. 마이모니데스는 유대교 랍비로서 이슬람에 대한 견해를 제시할 때 ‘유대교만이 진리의 종교’라는 기본 신념을 바탕으로 이슬람에 대해 논하였다. 그는 이슬람이 유일신 신앙을 가진 종교로서 우상숭배 종교가 아님을 주장했지만 그럼에도 진정한 종교가 될 수 없었던 근거로 경전과 예언자의 적합성 문제를 제기했다. 그는 철저히 유대교 중심주의에 입각해 모세와 토라(Torah)의 지위를 공고히 함으로써 무함마드와 쿠란의 지위를 부정했으며, 이와 더불어 예언자가 지녀야 할 자질을 제시하고 무함마드의 예언자 자격을 박탈하여 유대교의 종교적 지위를 확고히 하고자 했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the Maimonides’ perception of Islam in his representative works such as "Responsa" and "Mishne Torah." To achieve the purpose, this study examines his perception of Islam under the themes of "monotheism and idolatry," "Prophet Muhammad" and the "Quran." As a Jewish rabbi, Maimonides maintained a Halakah perspective centered on Jewish law when presenting his views on Islam. He discussed Islam based on the belief that only Judaism is a religion of truth. Maimonides argued that Islam was not idolatry as a religion of monotheism, but he raised the issue of the suitability of Quran and prophets on the grounds that Islam could not be a true religion. He denied the status of Muhammad and the Quran by solidifying the status of Moses and the Torah based on Judaism. Through these, he tried to maybe “strengthen” is better here the religious status of Judaism.
