초록

The study focuses on the safe management and disposal of disused sealed radioactive sources(DSRS) in South Korea. Due to the increasing volume and variety of DSRS from industries, hospitals, and researchinstitutions, there is a pressing need for effective classification and disposal strategies. This research aims to developclassification methods for DSRS based on their physical and radiological characteristics, and to design a conceptualdisposal container for their final disposal. The study considers the physical properties (size, shape, material) andradiological characteristics (activity level, half-life) of DSRS, along with the specific requirements of disposalfacilities. The study identifies key radio nuclides such as 137Cs, 60Co and 63Ni as priority targets for disposal dueto their high volume and activity levels. Conversely, isotopes like 192Ir, 55Fe and 57Co, with shorter half-lives, aresuitable for self-disposal after natural decay. The study also involves the structural analysis of a proposed disposalcontainer designed to safely contain DSRS. The container must withstand stacking pressures and potential dropimpacts while preventing radio nuclide leakage. The study’s findings highlight the need for robust design features toensure structural integrity during handling and storage. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive frameworkfor the classification and safe disposal of DSRS, contributing significantly to the enhancement of radioactive wastemanagement practices in South Korea.
