Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of stress, induced by COVID-19, on drinking problems and the mediating effect of depression among the rural middle-old aged. Data was taken from rural residents (n=339) aged 45 to 74 who agreed to participate in the study by self-report. Model 4 of PROCESS macro was employed to estimate the mediating effect of depression. The main results were as follows: 1) 28.6% of the subjects were categorized into the depression group (CESD-11≥16), and 22.5% of subjects were problem drinkers (AUDIT≥8). 2) Stress induced by COVID-19 had no direct influence drinking problems; however, it indirectly affected the problem through depression on a significant level. The results suggest that depression must be paid attention to for the prevention of and early intervention in the case of drinking problems among the rural middle-old aged, during the pandemic. Lastly, strategies for strengthening the mental health service delivery system and professionals in rural areas were discussed.
