본 논문은 조선시대의 문화 현상을 논리적으로 범주화하고 그 개념적 거리와 계층을 정의함으로써, 원하는 정보에 대해 정확하고 빠른 접근을 돕는 것을 목적으로 하는 연구의 산물이다. 기존의 문화분류체계들은 문화의 주제를 기준으로 분류하는 방식과 문화 요소의 양태를 기준으로 분류하는 방식, 그리고 이 두 방식을 혼용하는 방식의 세 종류로 나누어볼 수 있다. 문화의 주제에 따른 분류는 그동안의 학문적인 관용에 기초하는 바가 많아 연구자들이 쉽고 편하게 이용할 수 있는 방식이다. 반면 양태 분류는 항목의 논리적인 분할에 근거하고 있다는 점에서, 통시대적․범세계적 보편성에로의 가능성을 많이 함축하고 있다는 장점을 가진다. 본 연구는 새로운 분류체계를 설계하면서, 이 두 방식의 장점을 모두 수용하였다. 그러면서 종래와 같은 무원칙․무규칙적인 혼용을 피하기 위하여 주제 영역별 분류와 문화요소의 양태별 분류를 병행하고, 이를 각각 분류체계의 XY축에 배치하였다. 즉 하나의 문화현상을 영역과 양태에 따라 각각 분류하고, 이 두 분류값을 결합하여 최종 분류값으로 정하는 방식의 분류체계인 것이다. 이러한 원칙에 의하여 조선시대의 문화현상을 12개의 양태 항목과 75개의 주제 항목으로 구분하여, 총합 899개의 분류항으로 구성된 분류체계를 설계할 수 있었다. 이 새로운 분류체계는 앞으로 여러 차례의 시험 운용 과정을 거쳐 계속 확대․보완해 갈 예정이다.
Abstract
This proposal aims at creating of a new classification system, which logically classifies cultural phenomena of Chosun Dynasty and defines the conceptual distances among and the stratum of the phenomena. This new system will help scholars to access to the necessary informations easily and swiftly. There have been existed three styles of classification systems: the stile based on the difference of the cultural subject, the style based on the ontological mode of cultural elements, and the mixture of the two. The first one has strength in convenience. Therefore many scholars, relying on the academic habit, used this system. The second, however, has other strengths. Since it is based on the logical classification among the items, it has potentials to be utilized synchronically and in the end world widely. The new system suggested in this proposal utilized the strengths from both systems explained above. Nevertheless, this system separates the results from the two systems and allocated each of them to the axis X and Y respectively in order to avoid the disorder caused by the lacks of principle and regulation in combining the two systems. As it were, certain cultural phenomena are classified based on their values in their subjects as well as modes, and are combined into the final values. In this way the cultural phenomena of Chosun dynasty have been classified into the 12 mode items and 75 suject items, and 899 items are created in this system. This new system will be expanded and amended through the experimental uses.
