고성장 기술중소기업의 특성 및 결정요인에 관한 실증분석

초록

우리나라 전체 사업체의 99%, 고용의 89.8%를 차지하는 중소기업은 국민경제뿐만 아니라 산업구조에 있어 상당히 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있지만, 아직도 대기업에 비해 경쟁력은 크게 향상되고 있지 않아 중소기업 경쟁력 강화를 위한 다양한 노력이 필요하다. 특히, 기술중소기업을 통하여 일자리를 효과적으로 창출함과 동시에 4차 산업혁명을 기술중소기업 중심으로 이끌기 위해서고성장 기업을 발굴하고 육성하는 정책이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 기술중소기업의 기술사업성 및 경영주 역량 관점에서 바라본 고성장 기업의 특성과결정요인을 탐색한다. 이를 통한 고성장 가능성이 높은 기업을 발굴 또는 선별하는 방법을 모색하기 위해 기술보증기금이 기술사업성 평가를 통해 기술보증 지원한 중소기업을 대상으로 기술사업성 평가요소, 기업 규모, 기업의 연령 등이 고성장 기업에 미치는 영향을 실증분석하였다. 분석결과, 고성장 기술중소기업의 결정요인은 기술사업성 평가항목 중 “기술의 수명주기상 위치”, “기술인력 수준”, “기술개발전담조직”, “기술개발 및 수상(인증) 실적”, “기술의 차별성”, “경영주의동업종경험수준” 및 “시장 경쟁상황”과, 기업 규모, 기업의 연령 등으로 확인되었다. 구체적으로, 기술의 수명주기상 위치가 성장기에 있고, 우수한 기술인력과 기술개발전담조직을 보유하면서 기술개발 및 사업화 실적, 기술관련 인증이나 수상실적이 많고, 기술의 차별성을 확보하고 있는 기업일수록, 경영주의 동업종 경력이 길지 않을수록 고성장 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한기업의 규모가 작을수록, 업력이 짧을수록 고성장 가능성이 높다는 결과를 보였다.

Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) in South Korea, which account for about 99% of all Korean enterprises and 89.8% of total employment, play a vital role not only in the national economy but also in the industrial structure. However, the competitiveness of these firms has still not improved significantly compared to larger corporations. Considerable measures are required to strengthen the competitiveness of SMEs in South Korea. It is important to discover unknown high-growth firms and support them in government policies especially, to effectively create jobs and to lead the fourth industrial revolution through them. This study aims to explore the characteristics and determinants of high-growth technology-based SMEs in terms of technology-based business feasibility and capability of commercialization. Empirical analyses were conducted using technology-based business feasibility evaluation of SMEs that are supported by the technology guarantee provided by Korea Technology Finance Corporation(KIBO).The result shows that several indices for technology-based business feasibility evaluation, firm size and age have significant effects on the high growth potential of a firm. Furthermore, this study has shown that small and young firms with inexperienced CEOs have a higher potential of rapid growth.
