Abstract
In the 18th century, Yi Gan and Han Won-jin, who both belonged to Kiho school, gave rise to nationwide controversies about the moral purity of human mind. Yi Gan and his followers (Yi Jae, Im Seong-ju and Im Jeong-ju) insisted that human mind is completely good and pure when emotions have not arisen. The premise of their doctrine was that Li and Chi make a whole in human mind, so that the mind is the same as the human nature in its complete goodness. The theory like this was something different from the orthodox philosophy of Chu Hsi. Chu Hsi's rationalistic dualism strictly distinguished Li and Chi. Human nature and human mind were also considered different two things. Yi Gan and his followers's deviation from Chu Hsi's doctrine shows that their philosophy somewhat approached Wang Yang-ming's philosophy of mind. Wang Yang-ming's philosophy had not been positively admitted by Korean confucians since Li Hwang criticised the learning in the 16th century. Then what made the late Chosun neo-confucianism decline to that philosophy? In my opinion, there were two major goles in our traditional neo-confucian study on human mind. One was to understand human existence in rationalistic ways, and the other was to establish religious belief that human mind is the manifestation of ultimate goodness. The latter one drove the neo-confucianism of the late Chosun dynasty to put much emphasis on the purity of mind, and the religious tendency made the learning show a similar appearance to Wang Yang-ming's philosophy of mind.
