Abstract
Focusing Focusing on the aspects of the other world in stories about its experiences in Korea and China in the 17th~19th century, this study set out to examine the aspects and ideological trends of those stories. The other world of Choseon shares considerable similarities with that of China thanks to the Buddhism which was introduced to Choseon through China. At the same time, however, it also has important differences from the other world of China in detailed descriptions, especially in each country's attitude toward the other world. This study divided the stories about experiences with the other world in Korea and China according to whether they took place inside or outside of the other world and collected and sorted out expressions in each work. Choseon stories about the other world showed a distinct separation between the other world and this world and used very unrealistic expressions for messengers who take dead souls to the underworld, the journey to the other world, and figures in the other world. On the other hand, Chinese people believed in easy exchanges between the other world and this world, considered the other world as an ordinary one, and had no serious depictions of it. As for judgment and punishment in the other world, Choseon emphasized a pattern of cruel punishments for human misdoings whereas China tended to base their judgment process and retributions on each specific case rather than universal vice and wrongdoing. "白頭翁指敎一書生" from Cheongguyadam was found in China's "杜子春," and "遇新婦因夢成親" and "返故妻換魂持家" from Dongyahuijip were collected from "香紛地獄" and "鬼婦持家" from "諧鐸." "白頭翁指敎一書生" eliminated a considerable amount of Taoist tendencies and reinforced elements of Buddhism and folk faith in the process of bringing in "杜子春" even though it was not intentional. Dongyahuijip copied the text of "諧鐸" almost identically, criticizing the absurdity of the content that went against Choseon thinking and emphasizing actual occurrences. Experiences with the other world are fundamentally based on Buddhism but tend to vary among works according to the principal ideological tendencies. "Yojaejii" and "Jabuleo" show a strong trace of Taoism as can be seen by the amount of content related to village shrine gods. On the other hand, "Jeoseungjeon" of Choseon emphasizes Confucian virtues such as the three bonds and the five moral rules in human relations even though the highest of the heavenly gods of Taoism holds the highest position. Strong orientation toward Confucianism is one of the characteristics of Choseon's stories about experiences with the other world demonstrated in the authors' comments on punishments and stories about experiences with the other world.
