Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease requiring long-term pharmacotherapy associated with adverse side effects. This study aimed to examine the effect of an 8-week, non-pharmacological, multiple functional water-based treatment (MFWT) program on atopic dermatitis (AD) in children. Twelve children with confirmed AD (7 girls, 5 boys; mean 7.75±2.49 years) participated in this study. Their disease duration ranged from between 0.5 to 10 years. Patients participated in the MFWT program for 8 weeks, which included bathing in hydrogen water (HW), drinking alkaline reduced water (ARW), and spraying high concentration mineral water (MW) and electrolyzed acidic water (EAW) on AD lesions. Outcome measures were the scoring index of symptoms, skin test, photographic assessment, and satisfaction with the MFWT program. This program showed a remarkable improvement in AD skin severity symptoms including inflammation (p<0.05 at Week 6) and redness (p<0.05 at Week 8). Skin tests also revealed significant improvements in pore size (p=0.0241), roughness (p=0.0404), and wrinkles (p<0.001) by comparing before and after intervention as evident by physical appearances in the photographic assessment. Most of the participants showed high levels of overall satisfaction regarding the effects of the 8 week MFWT program using multiple functional waters (p=0.0011). The results of this study suggested that a hydrotherapy program using multiple functional waters may have therapeutic potential as a non-pharmacological alternative for the treatment of AD patients.
