Abstract

This study did an empirical experiment with reagent of physical developer(PD), oil red o(ORO) and nile red(NR) methods for dry specimen and wet specimen by lapse of time for effectiveness comparison of latent fingerprint development on porous surfaces. The result was : PD, using uncontaminated specimen, omitting the first rinsing specimen, was in the complicated process - maleic pretreatment, pretreatment rinse, PD treatment, rinsing it and more than three times exchange rinse for preventing over development - and showed the longest reaction time comparing the other two methods. Also, clean glass wares and glass bars were used because of PD's contamination sensitiveness and around two week short shelf life. Dermatoglyph visibilities on PD application for dry specimen and wet specimen got higher and higher by lapse of time except for dermatoglyph visibility on wet specimen in one week later. NR, although it had comparatively simple process-dipping specimen into working solution and rinsing it-needed special light and filter for its development result ; PD and ORO showed their results in the natural light. Despite the highest price of its reagent, NR showed unstable result with unidentified finger ridges and spread by lapse of time. Contrariwise, ORO had its simple process containing ORO treatment, rinse and PH 7 buffers treatment and short reaction time. It also was rarely affected by contamination. Besides the lowest price of its reagent of the three the shelf life of ORO working solution was six month long term. Though three weeks later the visibility of specimen began to be dim ORO showed stable and even development result of minute ridges that could recognize fingerprints. Therefore in case of developing latent fingerprints of wet, porous sample in less than one month it is desirable to utilize ORO method actively.
