Abstract
This study investigates whether the cutoff score criterion of the Utah system of polygraph evaluation used by the Korean National Police Agency is suitable in sexual violence cases. Polygraph test results and prosecution disposition results of sexual violence cases in Korea for the period 2018–2019 were analyzed. A total of 193 cases were classified into truth and lie groups through latent class analysis. Next, sensitivity and specificity for the sexual violence cases were evaluated, and finally, the optimal cut score criterion was calculated. As a result, the optimal cutoff score with the highest accuracy was calculated as -6, and the sensitivity and specificity were 95% and 85%, respectively. However, when the criterion was set to -6, it was found to result in a higher false positive rate at 15%. There is a limit to the high false positive rate when using this criterion. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to reset the criterion score more conservatively to –7 or –8 to reduce the error rate. This study is significant as it reviewed the suitability of cutoff score criterion of the Utah method through domestic sexual violence cases. The study findings may help set the criterion for determining the suitability of polygraph tests for domestic conditions and reduce the instances of individuals being falsely accused of innocent victims.
