조지훈 시의 미학적 원천 연구―청각성과 존재성의 미학을 중심으로―

이 글은 조지훈의 시 세계를 선행 연구들이 주로 제시한 시각성의 미학을 보완하기 위해 청각성의 미학과 존재성의 미학이라는 두 가지 층위에서 고찰하고, 이 둘이 결합되면서 상호 조응하는 양상을 통해 조지훈 시의 미학적 원천에 근접하고자 한다. 이를 위해 조지훈 시의 청각성의 미학으로서 ‘소리의 배음(背音)’과 ‘적막의 여운’을 추출하고 존재성의 미학으로서 ‘밤의 아우라’와 ‘승화의 거점’을 추출한 후, 이 두 가지 미학이 결합되면서 상호 조응하는 양상을 통해 조지훈 시의 미학적 원천을 규명하려 한다. 이 글은 조지훈의 시에서 색채⋅형태⋅풍경⋅율동 등의 묘사에 근거하는 시각성의 미학을 표면적 미학으로 인정하면서도, 이것을 생성시키는 동시에 그것과 혼융되는 청각성의 미학을 ‘소리’가 ‘적막’과 결부되는 양상으로 해명하고, ‘밤’의 상징이 보다 심층적인 영역에서 시각적 이미지 및 청각적 이미지의 묘사뿐만 아니라 ‘세속적 욕망의 승화와 초월’을 가능케 하는 시적 주체의 존재론적 상황이자 미학적 거점이라는 사실을 확인하고 이를 토대로 존재성의 미학을 해명한다. 조지훈의 시에서 청각성의 미학은 ‘소리의 배음’과 ‘적막의 여운’을 중심으로 표면적 미학인 시각성의 미학을 생성시키는 동시에 그것과 혼융되면서 전통에 대한 애착과 애수, 무한의 세계에 대한 염원과 회한 등을 형상화한다. 그리고 존재성의 미학은 ‘승화의 거점’인 ‘밤의 아우라’를 중심으로 무한의 세계를 추구하는 주체의 존재론적 상황을 형상화한다. 이 두 가지 심층적 미학 즉 ‘적막 속 소리’와 ‘밤을 통한 승화’가 결합되어 상호 조응함으로써 조지훈 시의 미학적 원천을 이룬다. 「고풍의상」⋅「승무」⋅「낙화」 등의 시는 표면적 미학인 외관과 율동에 대한 시각적 묘사뿐만 아니라 그것을 배후에서 생성시키는 청각성의 미학인 ‘소리의 배음’과 ‘적막의 여운’을 형상화하고, 여기에 시적 주체의 존재론적 상황이자 ‘승화의 거점’인 ‘밤의 아우라’까지 형상화한다는 점에서, 조지훈 시의 세 가지 미학이 종합된 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This article examines the world of Cho Ji-hoon’s poems from two levels of the aesthetics of auditory and the aesthetics of existence, and tries to approximate the aesthetic source of Cho Ji-hoon’s poems by combining the two and coordinating with each other. To this end, the two aesthetics after extracting ‘background of sound’ and ‘aftertaste of silence’ as the auditory aesthetics of Cho Ji-hoon’s poems, and ‘aura of the night’ and ‘base of sublimation’ as aesthetics of existence. Through this combination and coordination, the aesthetic source of Cho Ji-hoon’s poems is to be identified. This article creates a superficial aesthetic of depiction of colors, forms, landscapes, and movements through visual imagery in Cho Ji-hoon’s poems, and at the same time clarifies the aesthetics of auditory fusion mixed with ‘sound’ as the aspect in which ‘sound’ is connected with ‘silence’. Confirming the fact that the symbol of ‘night’ is the ontological situation or aesthetic base of the poetic subject that enables not only the depiction of visual and auditory images but also the ‘sublimation and transcendence of secular desires’ in a more in-depth area, and explain the aesthetics of existence based on this. In Cho Ji-hoon’s poems, the aesthetics of auditory creates the superficial aesthetics of visual images, centering on the ‘background of sound’ and ‘aftertaste of silence’, and at the same time blends them with attachment and sorrow for tradition, and aspiration and regret for the infinite world. And the aesthetics of existence is embodied in the ontological situation of the subject pursuing the infinite world centering on the ‘aura of the night’, which is the ‘base of sublimation’. These two in-depth aesthetics, ‘sound in the silence’ and ‘sublimation through the night’, combine to form the aesthetic source of Cho Ji-hoon’s poems. In addition to ‘Old Fashion Costume’, poetry such as ‘Monk Dancing’, ‘Flower Fall’, which most researchers and readers consider as the representative works of Cho Ji-hoon, have a common point that combines these three aesthetic characteristics.
