밀튼의 『실낙원』(Paradise Lost)과 같이 헛친슨의 성서적 서사시『질서와 무질서』(Order and Disorder)는 공화당파였던 헛친슨이 왕정복고로 겪은 정치적이고 개인적인 패배를 디디고 쓰인 작품이다. 창세기의 천지창조 이야기를 통해서 헛친슨은 공화국의 실패로 인해 와해된 세상에서도 신의 섭리와 질서가 있음을 주장하고자 했다. 그러나 그녀가 묘사한 에덴동산은 놀라운 정도의 무질서가 존재하는 것으로서, 이 작품은 신의 질서가 아니라 신의 무질서에 관한 것이라는 신학적 문제를 제시한다. 일부 비평가들은 이러한 문제점을 헛친슨의 문학적 미숙함에서 비롯된 것으로 보는데, 필자는 헛친슨이 보는 신의 질서는 보다 복잡한 것이며, 신이 창조한 질서의 절대성에 대해 의심을 일으키는 본질적인 신학적 문제를 제시한다고 본다. 논문의 1 부에서는 헛친슨이 신의 질서를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 분석하고, 2 부에는 분열이 창조된 신의 질서 속에 어떤 식으로 내재되어있는지 보여주고자 한다. 따라서 헛친슨의 서사시는 시인의 의도와는 달리 창세기의 천지창조 이야기 속에 숨어있는 틈과 모호성, 그리고 역설 등을 들추어내고 있으며, 이런 면에서 신의 창조가 완벽하고 절대적이라는 기독교의 정통적 입장에 도전하고 있다. 헛친슨은 결국 타락 전의 에덴을 앞으로 도래할 진정한 낙원에 비추어 “천한 낙원” (low paradise)으로 보고 거부한다. 그런 면에서 헛친슨의 작품은 한편으로는 정통적인 기독교 교리에 근거한 것처럼 보이지만, 다른 한편으로는 이에 대해 의문을 제기하면서, 17세기 영국의 복잡한 종교·정치적 상황에서 활발했던 성경 해석(exegesis)의 일면을 보여준다.
