로버트 로웰은 『인생연구』를 통해서 엘리엇의 객관적 시론의 영향을 받은 초기시에서 벗어나 로젠솔이 고백시라고 이름을 붙인 미국시의 새로운 형식을 개척하였다. 1950년대 이후 많은 시인들은 자전적 자아와 기억을 그들의 주요 주제로 삼았다. 오거스틴과 루소의 고백록이 기억과 자아에 대한 당대의 개념을 드러내듯이, 로웰의 시들도 최근의 자서전 이론에 나타나는 자전적 기억의 개념을 반영하고 있다. 기억에 관한 최근의 이론들은 기억을 상상적 재구성으로 본다. 기억은 사실 이상의 것을 포함할 뿐만 아니라 자아의 허구화 과정을 나타낸다. 필자는 기억이 단순히 사실을 복사하는 것이라기보다는 창의적인 과정이라는 전제하에 로웰의 『인생연구』를 분석하였다. 이 작품 속에 있는 산문으로 된 회고록인 “리비어가 91번지”는 상상적 재구성인 기억의 시적 과정을 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 로웰에게 기억은 자아가 세계 속에서 자신의 위치를 인식하는 과정이다. 『인생연구』에서 로버트 로웰은 끊임없이 자신의 사적인 과거로 되돌아가는데, 회상의 과정 속에서 그는 자신의 깊은 마음속에 있는 고통스런 기억들을 드러낸다. 그는 미국 문화의 배경 속에 자신을 위치시키고 자아 소외의 원인들을 찾고 있다. 그의 회상의 행위는 자신의 자아에 대한 이해로 이어지고, 그것은 마치 심리치료처럼 자신을 과거로부터 해방시킨다. 특히 그는 자신이 겪은 정신적 붕괴의 경험을 당대의 미국 문화로 확장시키고 있다. 로젠솔이 지적하듯이 로웰은 미국의 역사와 곤경을 자기 자신의 겪었던 사적인 경험 속에 구체화시키고 있다.
