초록

The purpose of this study is to examine Korean university students’ collocational knowledge of ESP vocabulary, in relation to their general English vocabulary knowledge and ESP proficiency. To this end, one hundred and thirty-two (N=132) university students in South Korea performed a convention English vocabulary(CEV) test and general English vocabulary(GEV) test that asked participants to provide both the meaning and collocations of 30 target words in each test. Participants’ convention English proficiency(CEP) was measured by a mock convention English certificate test. The participants were divided into three groups based on the result of GEV test-advanced, mid, lower level group. The results have shown that 1) there was a significant difference in participants’ convention vocabulary knowledge between the three groups, 2) only advanced groups showed a significant difference between the score of the meaning and of the collocation section in the CEV test, and 3) only advanced group showed a significant correlation of CEV to CEP. These results suggest 1) that L2 learners’ CEV knowledge may increase according to their general English vocabulary knowledge, 2) that L2 learners may develop collocational knowledge at the different rate as they develop semantic knowledge of convention vocabulary, and 3) the higher level of convention vocabulary knowledge, the higher level of convention English proficiency. Pedagogical implications and limitations of the current study are discussed.

Abstract

Pedagogical implications and limitations of the current study are discussed.
