초록
This paper aims to examine the female speaking in John Donne’s Songs and Sonnets, especially focusing on“Break of Day” and “Self-love.” Songs and Sonnets includes 55 love poems, but all poems have male speaking except the above two poems. The male speakers try to find out their ideal and perfect love, but they can’t everywhere. In result, they have a cynical and direct voice towards women, and the absence of ideal love leads to made the male speaker seek refuge in their little rooms such as in ‘sonnets pretty rooms’ in “The Canonization”, ‘one little room’ in “The Good Morrow”, and ‘in one bed’ in “The Sun rising.” Donne’s attitude towards gender, love, and women has represented his real life( a great visitor of Ladies) and the early 17th century historical and political traditions. The female speakers in two poems are not greatly different. They have a logical and real voice and try to keep their realist lover. Women’s attitude towards love is presented by bold and assertive voice. Female speakers have a super ego and self-centered idea. Their attitudes also represent political and social ideology. The female speaking refers to another male voice, and they also have same speaking.
