초록

The purpose of this study is to determine whether planned “matching” of an older volunteer with an agency, based on the volunteer’s skill sets and the organizational needs, results in greater volunteer satisfaction, commitment and role identity with the volunteering experience than when placement occurs without consideration of the volunteer’s skill sets and/or organization’s needs. This study used the data of the "Volunteerism among Older Adults in South Korea" collected by the Center for Excellence in Aging Services and Community Wellness (CEASCW) in 2010. It adopted the subset of 213 baby boomer volunteers in South Korea among the primary dataset. Descriptive and comparative analyses identified the differences between the boomer volunteer's who matched their skill sets and who did not match their skill sets in terms of demographic characteristics and volunteering factors. Path analyses estimated the mediating relationships between volunteer's subjective factors and engagement factors through the degree of matching skill sets. Multiple regression analyses found a significant direct effect for the set of independent variables. In terms of mediating effects, the Sobel test found an indirect effect of motivation on satisfaction and personality on satisfaction, even when mediated by degree of matching skill sets, suggesting a significant mediator as the degree of matched skill set to volunteering to measure engaging volunteer activity. The present investigation introduced the concept of longer transition into retirement, and examine how “matching skill sets to specific volunteer opportunities” can result in better accommodation of boomer volunteer needs, which in turn not only result in great satisfaction but also in more stable role identity gives and eventually in a greater sense of well-being during the stage of later life transitions.
