초록
Lexical effects include notions such as lexical frequency, lexical familiarity, and neighborhood density. Previous studies on mental lexicon, however, have shown controversies over how neighborhood density affects cognitive processing of the word. Lexical Restructuring Model (Metsala & Walley, 1998; Walley et al., 2003) suggests that neighborhood density facilitates the cognitive processing of the words, while Neighborhood Activation Model (Pisoni et al 1985, Luce & Pisoni, 1998) claims neighborhood density disturbs it. The purpose of the present study is to verify the neighborhood density effect and resolve the ongoing disagreement between Lexical Restructuring Model and Neighborhood Activation Model based upon the behavioral and ERP (event-related potential) experiments conducted by Korean learners of English. Both behavioral and sLORETA analyses verify the presence of inhibitory lexical competition effect in the cognitive processing of the words, which supports thesis proposed by Neighborhood Activation Model.
