노인의 가족유형이 성공적 노화에 미치는 영향 - 부모자녀관계의 매개효과를 중심으로

초록

고령화가 급속하게 진행되면서 성공적 노화는 노인의 삶의 질을 높이고 동시에 사회부담을 감소시킬 수 있는 방안으로 떠오르고 있다. 자녀와 동거여부는 규범적으로 노인의 성공적 노화를 위해 바람직한 것으로 오랫동안 여겨져왔다. 그런데 앞으로도 노인의 성공적 노화를 촉진하기 위해 자녀와의 동거를 권유해야 하는지는 일반 국민들과 정책입안자들에게 의문으로 남아있으며, 아직 노인복지정책방향을 정하는데 있어서 합의점을 찾지 못하고 있다. 이는 그동안의 연구가일관성있는 결과를 보이지 못하였기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구는 노인의 가족유형이 성공적 노화에 미치는 영향을 알아보고, 노년기 부모자녀관계의 매개효과를 파악해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2017년 노인실태조사 자료에서 현존하는 자녀가 있는 노인들 10,003명의 자료를 SPSS Process Macro를 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 신체적, 인지·심리적, 사회적 영역 모두에서 성공적 노화를 경험한 성공적 노화비율은 59.6%였다. 자녀와 동거하지 않는 노인이 동거하는 노인보다 성공적 노화수준이 높았으며, 자녀와 동거하지 않는 노인이 동거하는 노인보다 부모자녀관계에 더 만족했고, 부모자녀관계에 더 만족할수록 성공적 노화수준도 높아졌다. 노년기 부모자녀관계는 성공적 노화에 유의미한 부분매개효과를보였다. 이를 토대로 노인을 위한 복지정책방향이 자녀와의 동거보다는 부모자녀관계를 중심으로 지원하는 것으로 초점이 맞추어져야 한다는 정책적 함의를 제시하였다.

Abstract

As Korean society experiences rapid aging, promoting successful aging becomes a solution to simultaneously improve elderly’s quality of life and to reduce social burden. Even though cohabitation with adult children has been regarded as a desirable family structure for successful aging for a long time from oriental normative perspective, there have been debates about promoting cohabitation with adult children in the future among the lay people and policy makers. This is due to the inconsistent research findings related to this matters. The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of the family structure on successful aging and to find out the mediating effect of intergenerational relationships The study analyzed 10,003 elderly individuals from the 2017 national social survey data for the elderly using the SPSS PROCESS macro program. The results of the study showed 59.6% of the elderly experienced successful aging against physical, cognitive/psychological and social dimensions of successful aging. Relatedly, old people cohabiting with their children experienced lower levels of successful aging and lower levels of satisfaction with their children. The old people with lower levels of satisfaction with their children showed lower levels of successful aging. The intergenerational relationships mediated between the family structure and successful aging partially and significantly. The study suggested that the future policies for the elderly should instead focus more on supporting intergenerational relationships and less on promoting cohabitation with adult children.
