Aaron’s Racialized Body in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus

지난 수 십 년간 셰익스피어의 희곡 타이터스 안드로니커스에 대한 연구가 활발하였지만, 주요 등장인물인 흑인 아론이 가지고 있는 성적 행동에 대해서 아직도 더 많은 연구가 필요한 실정이다. 역사상 유럽인들은 아프리카 흑인 또는 다른 유색인종에 대해 야만적이고, 따라서 성적으로 과격하다고 여겨왔다. 셰익스피어 시대에도 식민주의가 팽배하면서 식민정책의 합리화를 위해 이러한 고정관념을 악용하였다. 하지만 유럽의 백인 남성들은 흑인 남성들을 성적인 야만인으로 간주하면서 아이러니칼하게도 그들에 대해 성적인 능력에 있어서 경쟁심을 느끼게 되었고, 백인 여성들이 흑인 남성들에 대해 성적인 매력을 느끼게 될까봐 불안해하게 되었다. 이러한 문화역사적 관점에서 아론이라는 등장인물을 이해하는 것이 타당해 보인다. 백인 여왕 타모라의 하인이면서 그녀의 숨겨진 애인인 아론은 자신의 성적인 매력 때문에 타모라를 마음대로 움직일 수있다고 확신한다. 성적매력에 근거한 힘을 가지고, 결국 아론은 로마사회를 파멸로 이끌면서 인종차별에 대한 복수를 하게된다. 『오델로』에서 그랬던 것처럼, 셰익스피어는 흑인남성과 유럽백인 여성의 성적인 관계에 대해 가부장적 유럽사회가 가지고 있는 불안감을 신랄하게 표현하고 있다.
