초록

In Louisa May Alcott’s “Enigmas,” the themes of gender identity and historical issues are deeply interconnected. Many readers have considered Alcott’s stories to primarily deal with the dynamics of domestic fiction. Nonetheless, her stories delve beyond domestic issues and explore the history of the United States. Through her relationships with people in Concord, she became acquainted with the internal and international conflicts of her contemporary period. In particular, this paper examines Alcott’s perception of politics in Europe in the 19th century. More specifically, her story “Enigmas” challenges traditional gender norms and criticizes imperialistic attitudes in Europe. Through her close relationship with Margaret Fuller, Alcott became aware of events in Italy and depicted the complex political tensions between England and Italy. Thus, “Enigmas” highlights Alcott’s literary ability to intertwine her sensational stories with historical issues, allowing readers to question gender identity and imperialism in the 19th century.
