Abstract

The paper attempts to explain the Buddha`s attitude on suicide from the viewpoint of Social Science. Much of what is written on suicide from a Buddhist viewpoint tends to try to establish whether suicide is permissible for Buddhists. The majority of Buddhists and the scholars of Buddhism take the view that suicide is acceptable for the Arhat. There is a division in morality between the suicidal act of an arhat and non-arhat in the Buddhism. But from the Social Scientist point of view, the focus would be located at not whether the suicidal act of an arhat or non-arhat, but the situations that the act is committed. The paper reviews the three cases of the suicide of arhats, Goddhika, Vakkali, Channa, considering the facts that all of them were on the situations of the unendurablephysical sufferings, probably of the very old ages. Although the majority of the scholars seem to agree that the case of Channa gives the best evidence that the Buddha condoned suicide, the Buddha’s concluding statement to the suicide, “Without reproach was the knife was used by the brother Channa”, is not necessary to the conclusion that Buddhism condones suicide. The meaning of the Buddha`s comment is not acknowledge the suicide, or justifying it, but the “acceptance” of the situation what the monks who are suffering from a serious degenerative illness.
