Abstract

Maha Parinirvana Sutra consists of 40 volumes and 13 chapters. Its main messages are the idea of the lifespan representing the eternally abiding dharmakaya; four virtues of Buddha—eternity, bliss, self, and purity; and that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature innately. The present paper provides an explanation of the notion of the lifespan representing the eternally abiding dharmakaya. Sakya becomes an eternal Buddha by attaining enlightenment, and recognizes and attains Nirvana, which is the original nature of existing beings. It explains the eternity of dharma body, which is attained after a body becomes extinct. Humans pursue the goal of happiness. This happiness is a state in which body and mind are perfectly satisfied and it becomes great if this state lasts forever. In Ekottaragama 31–5, Buddha stated, “No one is worse than me at obtaining happiness in the world.” The goal of pursuing and achieving happiness is eventually about suffering becoming pleasure, which leads to the everlasting pure dharma body. All sentient beings who have the Buddha-nature innately can be happy because they all have the Buddha nature. According to the first chapter of the Sutra, on life span, Tathagata is a being that originally transcended birth and death and reveals Nirvana to show the true nature of impermanence and the non-self to sentient beings. In the second chapter of the Sutra, on lament, disciples who grieve over death are asked to understand the mortality of life and cease their obsession with life. In the fourth chapter of the Sutra, on spiritual brotherhood the text states that “Tathagata lasts eternally and does not change.” Additionally, Kassapa is addressed, “Understand properly, Kassapa. The body of Tathagata is Vajrapāni and you will be devoted to this duty from today onward. You should not wish for body. Tell people that the body of Tathagata is the dharmakaya and staing at all times.” Here, reality and eternity are presented as two sides of a coin, as the realistic problem of death and the essential problem of seeking eternity are presented as related by interdependency, which is a relationship of dependent origination. Through death, Sakya is sublimated into the thought that his life-span as a representation of the eternally abiding dharmakaya through the eternity of death.
