반이민 정서 모형을 이용한 부정적 통일의식 분석

본 연구는 서울대 통일평화연구원의 ‘통일의식조사’ 데이터를 다양한 문화권의 반이민정서를 설명하는 모형에 적용하여 부정적 통일의식의 원인에 대해 분석한다. 최근 들어민족주의적 정서에 기반한 통일의 당위성이 약화되는 한편, 다문화적 인식이 강화됨에따라 통일의식을 이민에 대한 인식의 틀로 분석할 필요성이 커지고 있다. 분석 결과, 반이민 정서 모형에 근거한 변수들은 당위적 측면의 통일의식과 편익에 근거한 통일의식모두에서 유의한 설명력을 나타냈다. 반면, 단일민족 변수에 근거한 모형은 통일의 편익을 설명하는 데는 한계를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 현재 남한 사회의 통일의식이 ‘단일민족’ 이라는 특수성보다는 반이민 정서라는 보편적인 정서를 통해서 더 잘 설명될 수 있음을시사한다. 또한, 젊은 세대, 여성, 낮은 교육수준, 블루칼라 등 상대적으로 사회, 경제적으로 취약한 계층일수록 통일에 대해 부정적 의식 갖는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This research utilizes the data from ‘Unification Perception Survey’ of the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University to analyze the determinants of anti-unification perception in South Korea. Established theories on anti-immigration sentiment were employed as the models for this analysis. We find that the variables which represent the anti-immigration sentiment models well explain both the ethnic-based unification perception and the benefit-based unification perception. Meanwhile, the variable which represents mono-ethnicity had its limits in explaining the benefit-based unification perception. The results imply that the unification perceptions of South Koreans can better be explained by general theories of anti-immigration sentiment than the country-specific variable of mono-ethnicity. Furthermore, we also find that the socially and economically vulnerable cohorts such as younger, less educated, female, and blue-collar workers are more likely to have a pessimistic perception on unification.
