Abstract

This study examines the impact of personality on political attitudes within a social context characterized by prolonged exposure to violent conflicts, such as wars. Specifically, this study investigates how five personality factors - extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience – influence perceptions of unification, tendencies toward division, the pursuit of peace through cooperation, the pursuit of peace through military means, and ideological orientations. The results reveal that the five personality factors have a significant impact on political attitudes concerning the Korean Peninsula issue. However, our findings do not align with previous studies carried out in peaceful Western nations where individuals do not directly experience the threat of war. Our results suggest that the impact of an individual’s personality on political attitudes occurs through interactions with the social context surrounding the individual.
