통일 필요성 인식에서의 거주지 효과

본 연구는 서울대학교 통일평화연구원의 통일의식조사 자료를 이용하여 통일의 필요성에 대한 거주지의 평균 인식이 개인의 인식에 미친 영향을 추정한다. 추정 결과 개인의 인식은 같은 지역에 거주하는 응답자들의 평균 인식과 유의한 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 거주지 외부 접경지역의 인식과 개인의 인식 간에는 유의한 관련이 없었다. 또한 15세 이전 최장기 거주지와 현재 거주지가 일치하지 않으며 이 두 지역이 서로 다른 광역권일 경우에는 현재 거주지가 통일 필요성 인식에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 그리고 통일의 필요성에 대한 인식은 한국 사회에 관한 다른 인식 변수보다 거주지 평균인식과의 관련성이 상대적으로 낮았다. 본 연구의 결과는 개인의 통일 필요성 인식과 거주지역의 평균 인식이 관련이 있음을 보였을 뿐 아니라 그 경로 중 하나로 사회적 영향, 즉 자신이 속한 집단의 평균적 행동이나 태도로부터 영향을 받을 가능성을 제시한다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the relations between the perception of an individual on the necessity of the Korean unification and the public opinion among residents in the same city or province where the individual lives. Using data from the Unification Perception Survey, 2007-2021, we find that the former is significantly correlated with the latter, but there is little effect of the public opinion among residents in the neighboring regions on the individual perception on unification. In addition, it is found that the public opinion in the current area becomes weak or insignificant if an individual moves from a city or province to another one before he/she reaches the age of fifteen. We also uncover that the magnitude of the effect of average opinion on unification within a region on the individual perception on the same issue is lower than such effects regarding issues directly related to the South Korean society. Our findings suggest that social opinion of an individual on economic and political issues including support for inter-Korean unification is formed through interactions between people sharing the same living environments.
