오스만과 근대 도시 파리의 경관 : 발터 벤야민의 『파사주 작품』을 중심으로

논문은 발터 벤야민의 파사주 작품을 중심으로 나폴레옹 3세의 제2제정기 오스만에 의한 파리 재정비 사업을 검토하고 있다. 15년간에 걸쳐 이루어진 이 사업을 통해서 파리의 도로, 광장, 철도, 건축물, 하수도 등은 근대적인 외관을 갖추게 된다. 동시에 빈민과 노동자에 적대적이며, 파리중심의 중앙집중적이었던 이 재개발 정책은 거센 비판에 직면하기도 한다. 특히 벤야민은 오스만의 도시 정비 사업에서 일종의 시간과 공간의 판타스마고리를 읽어내면서 근대성 일반을 일종의 판타스마고리로 규정한다. 그러나 오스만의 도시재정비 사업은 많은 유럽과 미국 도시들의 모델이 되었고, 일본을 거쳐 아시아로 유입되기도 하였다. 논문은 이 사업을 비판적으로 고찰하는 벤야민의 시각을 전유하면서 근대적 중심화의 논리의 빛과 그늘을 조망하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper is about the reconstruction of Paris from 1853 to 1869 by Haussmann and Napoleon III. during the Second Empire. It suggests, that this newly constructed urban infrastructure of nineteenth-century Paris reflected some political and cultural ideologies, that have much to do with the process of the nineteenth-century nation building and nationalization of the people. It attempts to show this process of reconstruction of Paris through the changing of the narcissistic bourgeois consciousness, whose impact widened and deepened in culture and aesthetics. The landscape of the city, which was being changed by the bourgeois, the imperial state and capitalist accumulation formed a kind of phantasmagoria of time and space, from which W. Benjamin demand to be awakened. Ironically the reconstruction of Paris by Haussmann became a model for many modern European and American cities like Berlin in Germany; Avignon, Marseilles, Lyons in France; and Washington, Chicago, and other cities of Ohio in America.
