초록

나는 안산 다문화거리를 에스닉 관광을 하는 이동하는 관광객의 시선으로 문화기술지 연구를 수행한 바 있다. 이 연구를 수행하면서 나는 관광객, 이방인, 문화기술지자의 세 겹의 정체성 사이에서 헤매는 묘한 ‘실존적 체험’을 하였다. 연구자인 동시에 관광객인 내가 탈영토화된 공공장소인 안산 다문화거리에서 이방인으로 현상한 타자를 만나는 과정에서 애매성에 빠져 나의 정체성에 대한 성찰을 할 수밖에 없게 된 것이다. 또한 논문을 제출한 후 동료 사회학자들로부터 심사를 받는 과정에서 한국사회학을 지배하는 학문적 글쓰기 방식에 대해서도 성찰하게 되었다. 이 글은 이러한 체험을 이론적 ․ 방법론적 차원에서 성찰해보고 이를 동료 사회학자들과 공유해보고자 하는 일종의 ‘자아문화기술지’이다. 자아문화기술지는 연구자가 자신의 자아를 사회적 맥락 안에 위치지움으로써 자신의 ‘개인적인 것’을 ‘문화적인 것’에 연결시켜 연구하고 글을 쓰는 문화기술지의 한 장르이다. 연구자의 목소리가 포함되지 않는 리얼리즘적 문화기술지와 달리, 자아문화기술지는 대개 연구자의 일인칭 시점에서 기술된다. 연구자가 연구 중에 겪은 개인적인 체험을 전면화함으로써 자아와 타자의 상호작용에 대해 보다 깊은 성찰을 하기 위해서이다. 이러한 자아문화기술지 장르를 따라, 이 글에서 나는 연구 중에 겪었던 개인적인 체험을 사사화하지 않고, 한국의 일상문화와 한국사회학의 연구문화와 연결시켜 성찰해본다.

Abstract

Recently, I finished an ethnographic inquiry into Ansan's multicultural streets through the gaze of a fleeting tourist, during which experience I felt an "existential authenticity" of perplexity between being a tourist, stranger, and ethnographer. As a researcher as well as a tourist, I couldn't but avoid reflecting on my identities because I fell into an ambiguous situation in the process of meeting ethnic others appearing as strangers in deterritorialized public spaces. Also, I had to critically reflect on the dominant ways of academic writing in Korean sociology in the process of receiving peer reviews. This paper is a kind of autoethnography that aims to reflect on these experiences theoretically and methodologically and to share them with fellow sociologists. Autoethnography is a form of ethnography that seeks to describe and systematically analyze personal experiences and connect them to the cultural. Unlike the typical realist ethnography without the researchers's voice, autoethnography is written from the first person's voice in order to reflect on the interaction of the self and the other by foregrounding the researcher's personal experiences. According to this genre, I reflect on my personal experiences by connecting them with everyday life and culture of Korean sociology, rather than privitizing them.
