Abstract

The cultural omnivorousness, raised and argued by Peterson andhis colleagues, indicates the phenomenon that people of the upperclass like not only traditional elite culture and arts, but also diversepopular culture from the lower class. However, it is often found thatrecent studies about cultural omnivorousness excessively andone-sidedly focus on preference issues or in some cases, modify theoriginal meaning of omnivorousness for convenience. This studycenters on whether cultural omnivorousness exists in the Koreanaudiences’ moviegoing behaviors in the 2000s. It analyzes whether theoriginal cultural omnivorousness has appeared in the area of culturalconsumptions in Korea, not based on simple preferences towardindividual movie genres, but based on strict criteria whether he or sheactually watched a particular genre of movies. The results show thatincome level and education level, which have played an important rolein extracting the cultural omnivorousness in previous studies, are stillvalid in identifying major movie consumers, but do not influence thepatterns of movie genre consumptions. Also, those who have plentyof cultural capital tend to consume movie genres in such a way that Bourdieu’s homology thesis argued. Based on all these findings, thisstudy suggests the possibilities that when actual behaviors, not simplepreferences, are applied to the analysis of cultural consumptionpatterns, fundamentally different outcomes from previous studies mayappear.
