Abstract
Artist residencies in Korean society function as an arts support system. This study conducted a qualitative study on young Korean artists who are continuing their artistic work by utilizing art support such as artist residency. The purpose of this study is to understand the way young artists continue their artistic activities and daily lives, and to understand the impact of arts support on their activities. Research suggests that neoliberalism is also affecting the arts. In order to analyze the neoliberal characteristics of art support and the way artists accept them, the concept of governmentality and self-care presented by Michel Foucault was applied as a main framework for analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that neoliberal governmentality was found in art support methods such as artist residency, but mutual trust and consideration also existed. Artists meet the expectations of residency and continue their art work, and in the process of working, they are sometimes influenced by external influences such as others, people in the art world, and the art market. However, at the same time, it was possible to observe that he was forming his own image. On the other hand, it is quite paradoxical in that the ultimate goal of artists is at the point where they can do art work without support, and they can reach it only when they win the neoliberal logic of competition. This study shows that it is necessary to prepare realistic art support plans that help artists become self-reliant and continue their artistic activities by considering the artist's life cycle from a long-term perspective based on a sufficient understanding of the reality of these artists. It also shows that there is a need to consider ways to benefit more people.
