Abstract

This study provides an integrative neurobiological review of the benefits and potential adverse effects of meditation, focusing on brain networks (CEN, DMN, SN), the gut-brain axis, and psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology (PNEI). Meditation influences physical health, emotional regulation, task-related flow, interpersonal compassion, consciousness, and spirituality. Undesired reactions are classified into four stages: Transient Side-effect, Rebound, Backflash, and Adverse Effect, with detailed mechanisms and coping strategies described for each. This study emphasizes the importance of teacher competence and individualized support to ensure safe practice and integration. By presenting a balanced understanding of meditation’s effects and risks, this review highlights the need for practical guidelines to ensure safety and sustainability in meditation instruction and practice.
