Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reinterpret the self-i d e n t i c a l features of the Christian church from an ecclesiological perspective, focusing on Schleiermacher’s theological thoughts, in order to overcome the identity crisis of the current Korean Christian church. Since Christ’s redemptive self-communicating activity works through, with, and in the Christian church as His organic body in history, we should find the essential elements of the Christian church in its coexistence with the world only in Christ’s redemptive activity. According to Schleiermacher, the Christian fellowship retains its own s e l f-identical elements only by focusing on witness to Christ in its coexistence with the world because only Christ, as indicated already, possesses the archetypal personality of God-consciousness “through the absolutely original revelation of God in Him.” If the Christian church is not concerned with Christ’s witness, it will lose its own essential features as the Christian church. This article consists of the following five sections. In first introductory section, we discuss the nature of the problem. In the second section, we consider the Christian church as a “kerygmatic community” based on Christ’s prophetic activity. In the third section, we define the Christian church as a sacramental community based on Christ’s priestly activity. In the fourth section, we explain why the Christian church should be a “teleological community” based on Christ’s kingly activity.
