Abstract

This study investigates and examines the ecclesiology of postconservative theology postulated by Kevin Vanhoozer as one of the new understandings of the church at the dawn of the 21st century. As the postmodern trend expands its influence wider and deeper on the world, the feature of the church is sharply changing her external shape and cultural cloth in diverse ways. There could be several reasons for these changes, but one of the most effective cause for the change is a postmodern cultural shift. Kevin Vanhoozer digested well those postmodern cultural shift and deconstructive hermeneutics, and he reconstructed conservative theology and submitted a canonicallinguistic theology which is identical with post-conservative theology. Based on the post-conservative theology, Vanhoozer elucidated and submitted a revolutionary ecclesiology by using a method of analogia dramatis. The church is the theater of theo-drama, which contains drama of doctrine, script of the Bible, dramaturgy of theology, and performance of Christian practice. The drama of doctrine directs the theater and company of the Gospel to perform the functions of the orthodoxy church. The analogia dramatis ecclesiology provided alternative potentiality for dynamic and vital interpretation of the scripture by going beyond those propositional and foundational limitations in the traditional conservative theology. The analogia dramatis ecclesiology has other innovative features such as theater of reconciliation, company of the cross, theater of martyrdom, celebratory theater of word and sacrament. The post-c o n s e r v a t i v e ecclesiology performs innovative engagement in breaking the walls of segregation among racial and ethnic differences. However the p o s t-conservative ecclesiology exposes limitation of logical inconsistency and linguistic mismatch between canonical-linguistic and analogia dramatis ecclesiology. Otherwise, this essay made rubric on the post-conservative ecclesiology to have a positive potentiality for development of postmodern church.
