초록
The Emergence of liberation theology of Latin America in the early 1970s was a monumental event in the history of Christian theology. The theology turned the theological stream from the theory-c e nteredness to the praxis-centeredness in seeking the ultimate criterion of Christian truth. While earlier Christian theology had sought the way of the right understanding (ortho-dox), liberation theology advocated the way of right acting (ortho-praxis). Although the actual impact of the theology in the Latin American societies recently became much weaker with various reasons, its theological influence spreaded over almost all progressive spirits of the 21st century Christian theologies. Now, Christian theology hardly accomplishes its theoretical tasks without the theme of liberation which is the practical aim of what liberation theology teaches with the idea of praxis. The basic concern of this paper is to quest for a fundamental role of praxis and to discover its epistemological meaning in theological conceptualization. First, I will describe the underlying historical motivation of liberation theology that stresses the significance of praxis as a theological subject. Second, I will examine main ideas of three prominent liberation theologians, Gustavo Gutiérrez, Juan Luis Segundo, and Clodovis Boff. Here, I discuss the topic of praxis in the link with other issues such as the role of faith in praxis, ideology and truth, dialectics in the verification of truth, persistent ambiguity in every human context, and so on. Finally, I will point out the epistemological interest of liberation theology, its robust objection to apolitical escapism, idealistic theoreticism, and pragmatic functionalism in theological endeavors.
