Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze John Wesley’s holiness theology and his political ethics. The study of Wesley’s theology and ethics is a study about the church and society of the eighteenthcentury England as focused on the life and activity of Wesley. Wesley is perhaps one of the most penetrating thinkers in Christian history. His faithful and social influence in eighteenth-century certainly marks him as one of the most significant people of the period. He has once said, “There is no holiness but social holiness. You can’t be a solitary Christian!” Wesley’s church and society reform means that the full rage of God’s saving will for the world is being enfleshed in the persons and institutions of the world. This paper deals with the aspects of Wesley’s holiness theology and political ethics that their full practical development in state and church lead surely to social transformation. In this paper, chapter II shows how Wesley’s holiness theology has been related with his political ethics. The core of his theology is the doctrine of sanctification in its broad meaning and promise from scripture. Wesley based the structure of sanctification (second grace) on observed experience. But his doctrine of sanctification is relatively inner and personal, not social. Therefore it has in political-ethical sense conservative characters. Wesley was a political conservatist. In social-ethical sense, he indeed possessed an acute political and social attitude as standpattism. Chapter III analyzes Wesley’s political praxis-Actions, which arose out of his sermons and writings. Wesley knew what was shaping the needs of the people in eighteenth-century England, their economic and social problems, their poverty, hunger, wealth, and depression. He had political and social attitudes as a conservatist against the state power and the war. His theological convictions rested encouraging the sovereignty of God and monarchy and liberty (on slavery, people and women) in England. His reflections on these themes of sin and war have revealed his affinities to the contemporary from Christian realism. He has managed the issues of women preaching in his connection with prophetic interpretation that would have forced the hand of the Church of England. The concluding chapter summarizes the insights and results from Wesley’s holiness thoughts and political actions. His holiness theology would have conservative characters, his social ethics is demonstrated to be of a conservative reformist rather than a revolutionary character. His holiness theology and political-ethical theory is presented by a summarizing list of his moral practice for reform of church and society. His context is not our context, but it is important in understanding his particular Christian social-ethics.
