Abstract
This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Christian miracles to people living in the age of science based on the new terms and concepts regarding miracles. To achieve this goal, I first analyze the traditional understanding of miracles in Christianity and discuss the conceptual and epistemic limitations by academically reexamining allegedly historical events known as “miracles” from biblical times to today; then I suggest the “pneumatological-eschatological” approach to miracles as a new and alternative understanding of miracles. Traditional notion of miracles in Christianity could be viewed as objective events and events incompatible with the current natural order. In other words, the highly unusual, non-repeatable, and unique occurrences called miracles, which have been reported in nature and history, are events that are incompatible with the current laws of nature —regardless of the progress of human understanding of nature. These, as supranatural incidents that transcend the natural order, are noticed as objective events regardless of time and generation, since it is quite difficult for observers to interpret the miraculous as natural events depending on their subjective interpretations. However, this traditional view presents challenges, particularly regarding the idea of God’s intervention in the world, which seems to conflict with the doctrines of divine consistency and perfection advocated in classical theism, while also giving rise to the problem of “miracle theodicy”. To address these issues, I propose a new perspective, “pneumatological-eschatological” understanding of miracles. The Spirit of God is not a being located outside the world, but has always been present within it, and this continuous presence of the Holy Spirit can be considered as working retroactively from a future, a new creation. Here, an eschatological concept of miracles is introduced. In light of the theological imagination based on the Scriptures, I argue that the miraculous events reported in history and nature are events originating from the coming kingdom of God to which the new law of nature has been applied. Miracles, from that perspective, can duly be regarded as proleptic events retroactively acted by triune God from the eschatological new creation into the present creation.
