Abstract

Today, the climate crisis manifests itself in various natural disasters. Nature’s convulsions, such as massive wildfires, heat waves, droughts, typhoons, and rising sea levels occurring worldwide, threaten human life and various species. One of the main causes of these natural disasters is global warming due to increased carbon di- oxide emissions. This paper aims to examine the relationship be- tween the climate crisis and doctrine, and to present a new formula (doctrine) to guide Christian life in the face of the climate crisis. The climate crisis has been caused by human desire treating God’s creation as an object of conquest rather than protection. Today’s cli- mate crisis demands a transformation in human perception of nature. This paper proposes a new formula of ‘Incarnation→Life-giving→ Kingdom of God’ instead of the traditional ‘Creation→Fall→ Salvation’ formula to transform Christians’ perception of nature. The new formula ‘Incarnation→Life-giving→Kingdom of God’ un- derstands all creation as God’s incarnation and calls for participation in ‘life-giving’ for all living beings, including humans. In this formula, the Kingdom of God is not achieved in the afterlife but can be real- ized here and now. When we participate in life-giving, the Kingdom of God will come to both those who participate in life-giving and the objects of life-giving (humans or all creation). If we read the Bible from beginning to end through the lens of this new formula ‘Incarnation→Life-giving→Kingdom of God’, Christians’ perception of all creation will change. When our perception of nature shifts from conquest to gratitude and respect, we expect our carbon footprint to gradually decrease.
