Abstract

W. J. Scheifley, the first chief of Dental college of Severance Medical School, a dentist and member of North Presbyterian Church, was dispatched to Korea in 1915 at the request of Evison. Scheifley was one of the American missionary-dentists who made efforts to organize the dental college in Korea. Scheifley established the dental clinic in the Severance Hospital and the dental college in the medical school. That was the first time that American dentistry was introduced to Korea. Also, it was the beginning of organized efforts of American missionary-dentistry in Asia. However, at that time, the Dentistry of Severance Hospital could not make much difference from that of private clinics in terms of its dentists and equipment. They tried to educate medical school graduates in the special courses to train them as specialized dentists, which was discouraged by the regulations of Japanese government. Despite all his efforts for establishing a dental school and courses for a dental specialist, Scheifley could not see any practical results and resigned in 1921, due to his deteriorating health. After leaving Korea, he opened his clinic and served for the church wholeheartedly. Around 1926, as an advisor to the American Dentists Association, he worked to help his successors, J. L. Boots and J. A McAnlis, a build new dentistry building. He received his Ph.D. degree in dentistry from Temple graduate school. He died in March 19, 1958.
