Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the aesthetics of cinematic realism and duration in the digital slow cinema since the 21st century, engaging the aesthetic or ontological questions of the cinematic medium. The proliferation of slowness in contemporary art cinema has been inseparable from the advent of digital technology. Amplifying the temporal capacity of sequence shots, digital technology has also contributed to a radically new mode of observational practices in contemporary cinema. It has allowed directors in the forefront of contemporary cinema to activate real-time recording of the profilmic world and to take a new realistic form of cinema based on deceleration and duration. Investigating Pedro Costa’s In Vanda’s Room and Jia Zhangke’s Still Life, two digital slow films that reestablish reality as the duration of elongated life, this paper revisits a refreshed question on the aesthetic of realism in the post-cinema age and ponders upon the essence of cinema.
