Abstract

In 1960s, The Soviet Union was recognised so called 'Tolerance and Chaos' all over the society. However, Sergei Parajanov who made films with his peers like Tarkovsky went through severely during the period. When his movie < Shadows of forgotten Ancestors/ 1964> was released to the world, the entire film world praised him as 'a genious film director'. However, the soviet union's film industry kept watching over him and sent him a jail. It is like passing sentence him to death for his film works. As for the director who is a nationalist of Armenia, the minor nation of the Soviet Union, the nation's policy was unreasonable shackles for him. Moreover, the soviet union's film industry would not accept the pieces of his works which were armed with socialist realism. Parajanov who started as a great national filmmaker of Armenia found his artistic ways through friendship with Russia's phenomenal film director, Tarkovsky. However, he had continuous unreasonable suppression from the people who did not understand his mentality. But, ironically his thoughts for the life and his aesthetic quest for films became stronger and deeper through his miserable life. Through his two beautiful films <Shadows of forgotten ancestor/ 1964> <The Legend of Souram Fortress / 1985>, we can find out that he is the real genius film director who was free from the era and the society. Most of the time, the era was made by a certain person(hero), but at a certain period of a distorted history, the person who should be together with the era, disappeared with his arts just like that. Sergei Parajanov, who is likely forgotten in the soviet union's film history. That is why he and his works are more precious than ever.
