Abstract
This study aims to provide new interpretations of Brahm’s and Reger’s clarinet quintets by examining each work through the lens of the other work. In the context of extant research which shows that Brahms's characteristic melodic prose structure is closely related to the interval of a fifth, this paper examines the compositional method of unfolding tones on the basis of preceding research. Brahms's compositional technique for creating the melodic flow reminds of Hanslick's definition of music as “sonically moving forms” influenced by the development of science in his age. In this regard, it is assumed that melodic progressions are based on physical concepts such as force, motion and energy. Thus, this study discusses how the musical motion unfolds in Brahms’s 2nd movement and Reger’s 3rd and 4th movements by applying the metaphor of ‘concealing and revealing.’ In conclusion, Reger’s compositional process not only reveals the concealed, potential tones but also Brahms's idea of concealing and revealing.
