예술적 연구는 무엇인가? 예술적 연구는 역사적 연구와 어떻게 다른가? 이 글에서는 시각예술가 남화연이 2012년부터 2020년까지 진행한 최승희 연구를 분석함으로써 예술적 연구를 설명할 수 있는 구체적인 사례를 제시하고자 하였다. 역사적 연구가 흩어진 퍼즐을 맞추는 행위라면, 예술적 연구는 새로운 주체성 생산을 위한 프락시스(praxis), 즉 실천행위이다. 역사적으로 실존했던 인물인 최승희에 대한 남화연의 연구가 역사적 연구가 아닌 예술적 연구인 이유는 이 연구의 최종 목표가 최승희라는 한국 근대 역사에서 문제적 인물의 원본성을 해체하는 것이기 때문이다. 나아가 본 연구는 남화연이 자신의 예술적 연구를 안무라는 특수한 용어로 설명하고 있음을 주목했다. 근대무용 제도에서 탄생한 기술 용어인 안무는 쓰기라는 어원을 포함한다. 데리다의 철학에서 쓰기(écriture)는 서양 형이상학에서 주체 개념에 전제된 기원, 혹은 원본이라는 개념을 해체하는 전략이다. 이러한 맥락에서 주체성은 다양한 쓰기로 인해 발생하는 사후 효과이다. 이 글에서는 남화연이 사용한 안무라는 개념을 데리다의 쓰기 개념을 빌려 분석함으로써 어떻게 안무가 예술적 연구의 전략으로 작동할 수 있는지 논의하였다.
Abstract
This article aims to provide a concrete example of artistic research by analyzing the study of Seung-hee Choi conducted by Hwayeon Nam from 2012 to 2020. While historical research involves piecing together scattered puzzles, artistic research is a praxis for generating new subjectivity. Hwayeon's Nam research on Choi Seung-hee is considered artistic rather than historical because its ultimate goal is to deconstruct the originality of Seung-hee Choi, a contentious figure in Korean modern history. This study highlights that Nam Hwayeon uses the specialized term ‘choreography’ to describe her research strategy. ‘Choreography’, a technical term derived from the modern dance system, carries the etymology of writing. According to Derrida’s philosophy, ecriture (writing) is a strategy used to deconstruct the concept of origin or originality. In this context, subjectivity is a consequence that arises from various forms of writing. This article discusses how the concept of choreography can function as a strategy for artistic research.
